Saint Joseph Hospital Kagondo is a voluntary non-profit making agency (VAH) owned and run by Bukoba Catholic Diocese. The hospital is found in Muleba District, Kagera Region. It started its operations in 1912 by the Missionaries of Africa known as White Fathers and White Sisters. It started as a dispensary and gradually grew up into what it is now
The hospital is situated in the northwestern part of Tanzania,The hospital is easily accessible from the main road, which communicates Bukoba and Mwanza. Patients come from all over the region, but about two third come from Muleba district. The district covers an area of about 11.000 sq. kilometers. With a total population estimated at 637,659 people according to 2022 census. Because of its location, it is among the more preferred hospitals in Muleba district despite the proximity of other hospitals around it. In the year, 2024 admissions were about 2218 while annual outpatient contacts for the year 2022 were 7,299 patients. Although small parts of the costs are government funded especially the pregnant women and under-five, the hospital mainly depends on patients' fees.
There were 150 employees in the hospital, the employees are of three categories: Government granted, seconded ones and locally employed staff. The hospital has a capacity of 160 registered beds divided in four wards, which are male, female, paediatrics and obstetrics. The hospital also provides its services through a diabetes and hypertension clinic, reproductive and child health (RCH) clinic, HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Clinic (CTC), outreach clinic, operating theatre, physiotherapy department, orthopedic and orthotic department and an infusion unit. We are in plan of starting or initiating Dental clinic and mental clinic. Moreover we are also planning to have ENT clinic specifically Goiter clinic.
With the outreach program, we visit neighbouring villages to educate parents about children's health, monitor their health and vaccinate them. Pregnant women can get medical aid and information about pregnancy and delivery. The villages are remote, not connected by public transport and on a walking distance of 2-3 hours from the hospital. These villages are sometimes difficult to reach, even by car.
The hospital services include curative, preventive, surgery. The hospital has been rendering Services in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) every three Months and they come from Bugando Medical Centre. Orthopaedic Surgeon is based here at Kagondo Hospital rendering Services on Daily bases. The hospital catchment population is approximately 60,000 people.
By the assistance of Donors, Central and Local Government and Diocesan Health Department, Kagondo Hospital has managed to provide services and maintain a good medical and ethical standard. The hospital is largely dependent on the patient fees that cover approximately 85% of the total expenditure. it is partly supported by the Central Government grant and local government (basket fund) that covers about 10%, and the remaining percent is donor's fund).
